Down Ampney
Appeal
Down Ampney is famous for for the fact that Vaughan Williams
was born in the village and was baptised in its church. His father was vicar
and is buried in its churchyard. VW later wrote the hymn tune Down
Ampney in memory of this special corner of Gloucestershire. The church
was built in 1263 by the Knights Templars with additions in the C14th and C15th,
and visited by Elizbeth I. The village is also famous for its effort during World
War Two when it stationed countless brave young men who flew to Arnheim from
the village airfied. Many soldiers and nurses are now buried in the peaceful
churchyard.
An architeural survey has revealed that the 140-year-old roof of All Saints Church
can no longer be patched. In order to save this beautiful and historic building
for future generations and appeal has been launched. It is estimated that £120,000
is needed to make the necessary repairs. If you wish to help please either contact
