Canon Martin Draper was ordained in 1975 to serve as an assistant curate of St Mary-the-Virgin, Primrose Hill, often regarded as the birthplace of the English Hymnal in 1906. He then went to St Matthew's, Westminster, another parish in which hymns were tried out on the congregation before being incorporated into both the original book and its successor the New English Hymnal in 1986. He joined the Board of Directors of the English Hymnal Company in 1980, becoming Chairman in 1998. Much of his ministry has been spent in the Diocese of Europe, both as Chaplain of St George's, Paris and Archdeacon of France.
