Vaughan Williams and his circle with Graham Johnson
To celebrate Ralph Vaughan Williams's half-centenary year, Graham Johnson has devised a series of five concerts that will explore the composer's vocal music alongside that of his colleagues and contemporaries. Programmes will include early ballades that Vaughan Williams would have heard in his youth; the music of his fellow folksong collector, Percy Grainger; the Humbert Wolfe settings of close friend Gustav Holst; songs by probably his most distinguished contemporary, John Ireland; and finally Vaughan Williams's music is set beside that of Benjamin Britten, at whose pacifist tribunal he spoke.
