Vaughan Williams statue unveiled

A statue of Vaughan Williams, by the sculptor William Fawke, was unveiled Thursday, 19th April 2001 outside the Dorking Halls Theatre in Dorking. For many, it was at last, a more visible memorial for the man who did so much for the town not only musically but as a citizen. The statue was unveiled by Ursula Vaughan Williams, the composer's widow. Guests included Michael Kennedy, biographer and friend of VW.

The ceremony coincided with the start of the Leith Hill Festival where RVW was conductor for many years. On a typical spring day, the festival was started by the choirs singing 'Song for a Spring Festival'.
