Ralph’s People: The Ingrave Secret by Frank Dinnen. The book is a story about the meeting between the 31 year old Ralph Vaughan Williams and 74 year old Charles Potiphar, a labourer from Ingrave in Essex. Pottipher sang the beautiful folk song Bushes and Briars to RVW and the effect on the composer was overwhelming. It was to influence his music forever and change his life. With plenty of illustrations, the book is rich in Essex social history and will appeal to anyone interested in English Folk Song as well as Vaughan Williams.
