A remarkable collection of historic Vaughan Williams recordings preserved by his widow, Ursula, is now released by Albion Records.
Made between 1961 and 1972, the recordings were entrusted by Ursula in 1996 to Stephen Connock, then Chairman of The Ralph Vaughan Williams Society, for eventual issue by the Society.
Fourteen of the album’s seventeen tracks have never previously been issued commercially. Carefully restored from Ursula’s own records, they encompass evocative wartime film music, two major chamber works, Organ Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes, an extract from Hodie and the composer’s music for the Masque of Charterhouse.
Together, these performances illuminate a remarkably varied span of Vaughan Williams’s music and preserve the work of distinguished interpreters including the Aeolian Quartet, John Carol Case and Sir George Thalben-Ball.
